Diamond Lake/Rocky Mountain

This is a 3.5 hour return walk to the top of Rocky Mountain adjacent to Diamond Lake near Lake Wanaka, with stunning scenery along the way.  This is one of the best and most accessible of the Wanaka guided walks. In places, the track is steep but easy enough if you take your time. (Please Note: Due to track condition the second half of this walk may now only be suitable for fit and experienced walkers. Therefore in some cases we may now walk to the Lake Wanaka Viewpoint only and not to the top of Rocky Mountain- 2.5 hours walking instead of 3.5 hours).

From Wanaka we take a 25 minute scenic drive around Lake Wanaka to Diamond Lake. From the car park we walk up to then around Diamond Lake and then steadily climb up a good track overlooking Diamond Lake. Soon we enter the weeping forest, then take a right-angled turn in search of the light. We then come to the wailing wall where during the wetter months of the year water drops fall from the over-hanging cliff. Enjoy an overview of Diamond Lake from the viewing platform.

From here we walk to the top of Rocky Mountain (if clients are suitably fit and experienced), or to the Lake Wanaka Viewing Point. From here we enjoy wonderful panoramic views over Lake Wanaka and the Matukituki River. After relaxing here for lunch and refreshments we head back down and go on a different loop track around Diamond Lake, to our starting point and back to Wanaka.

Blue Pools & Bridle Track Walk

“The Blue Pools track is closed until further notice due to the swing bridge access being closed suddenly without any prior warning on 26/5/23. The anticipated reopening has now been extended out and we have not been given a projected opening date by the Department of Conservation so the Blue Pools track is closed until further notice. The Bridle track however is still open and we can still do a modified day tour by adding in two other exciting walks in this Makarora region. Click on the link below to find out more about this exciting alternative walk”

Click here for more info about our new Bridle Track, Haast Pass and Makarora Bush walk.

This combination of walks is definitely a highlight of the Haast Pass.

We walk down the gravel path through the Silver Beech to the Blue Pools, to spot feeding Rainbow and Brown trout from the swing bridge over the Makarora River and the viewing platform overlooking the crystal clear blue pools. Then we have lunch at Cameron Flat, with commanding views over the Makarora River to the Main Divide of the Southern Alps.

After lunch from Davis Flat, we follow the Bridle Track on the original and horse-only access to the West Coast. The walk passes through beech forest, and follows the upper reaches of the Makarora River, with stunning river and valley views. The two river crossings we encounter are both bridged. We meet the vehicle at the top end at Haast Pass so there is no need to back track.

Departing the Haast Pass we return to Wanaka with wonderful views of both Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea and many photo opportunities along the way.

Outlet Track Guided Walk

The Outlet Track is an easy walking track along the banks of the Clutha (Mata-Au) River. The track is suitable for walkers of all ages, and offers good scenic views along the way. We can see brown and rainbow trout swimming in the crystal clear water as we walk up the river.

In autumn many of the trees along the walk turn to a stunning gold and cover the track with a golden carpet. Impressive views can be taken of Mt Iron, the Southern Alps and in particular the permanent ice of the Fog Peak Glacier.

Our walk finishes at Lake Wanaka, with panoramic views of New Zealand’s fourth largest lake spilling the South Island’s second longest river and the largest river by volume in New Zealand. Join us on one of the best Wanaka guided walks!
