An extremely well worthwhile & most enjoyable adventure.
Jamie our exceptionally knowledgeable tour guide & extremely talented skipper took us initially on a wonderful boat trip on Wanaka Lake, followed by a marvellous walk on Mou Waho Island. Every step of the way we discovered more about the area, the environment, the history, the flora & fauna. The bird life was fascinating, the views truly breathtaking, the whole experience uniquely memorable. I can highly recommend this tour
Fantastic trips and wise guide : Lake cruise and Alpine Lakes Helihike
A wet day did not dull the enthusiasm from Chris nor our enjoyment of Mou Waho island and the important conservation work . The following day ,in glorious sunshine and with a fresh fall of snow on the mountains we visited the alpine lakes on a helihike – absolutely stunning ! The scenery and Chris’s patience and knowledge made it a memorable day . In short : brilliant .
Rob Roy and an Island Tour
We had such a wonderful time on these tours and can’t recommend them too highly. The guides are very knowledgeable, friendly and considerate. They also had a great sense of humour and a love of nature that went so far as to help put native trees back on the island. Both tours have been the highlights of our trip to NZ so far. Do this. Really, you won’t be disappointed.
Weka bird island
We got a private tour to the Mou Waho island, we didnt had chris, but our guide, Jamie, was also well informed fauna and flora on the island, we had a wonderfull walk up to the top where there is a lake with stunning vieuws. We met several weka birds . I can recommend this tour to everyone!
Amazing views and fantastic guide!
I was lucky enough to head out on a picture perfect day; the lake was flat as a pancake and the sun was shining. Chris was brilliant from the word go, even letting my almost 2 year old check out the boats controls which made his day! Chris has fantastic knowledge of the island and stopped to show us interesting plants and wildlife on the way to what is one of the most spectacular views in the world! Planting a native tree is a great touch which really adds a great extra element to the trip. I would definitely recommend this trip, brilliant…thanks Chris and the Eco Wanaka team!
Excellent is not a high enough ranking!
If your anticipating doing the Rob Roy Glacier track heed the National Parks advice and do it with a guided tour like that offered by Eco Wanaka Adventures. It’s a full day trip with a high level of physical activity but all I can say is ‘no pain no gain’ as they say! Sure you’ll be exhausted, sure your muscles will ache, but look at it this way, you’ll get to see something that most other tourists won’t. An icy avalanche that occurs almost on que. Suspension bridges, raging torrents, delicate fernery and mosses, tropical rainforest giving way to the tussocky ranges of the alpine tundra and visits by the colourful and cheeky native Kea make the Rob Roy track an experience that you will always remember.
Breathtaking scenery with excellent guide
I did the guided walk on the Rob Roy Glacier track. There were only three of us with the guide so it was a very personalised excursion. Our guide was very knowledgeable and that enhanced the experience. The walk was beautiful all the way, and the views at the top were breathtaking. A sidestep on the drive back at the Wishbone Falls capped off a wonderful day.
On top of the world!
We did the Heli Hike to land in the footsteps of the Hobbits and Lord of the Rings characters. Even though we have never seen those movies, we can imagine how wonderful those scenes must be now that we have seen the landscape in real life! Chris was an outstanding guide, who explained a lot to us about the birds and flowers we saw, plus the mountains and scenery. The helicopter flights to near the glacier, and then being left on top of a mountain at 6,000 feet was a once in a lifetime experience. Just amazing! We hiked down hill for around 2 hours, but only covered a couple of km, because we stopped often, took photos and even had some afternoon tea on top of the mountain. This is a bucket list tour – make sure you do it!
Great Rob Roy glacier hike
My husband and I did a Rob Roy Glacier Hike with Heidi in December 2016. This is a hike that you can easily do on your own, provided that you have rented a four wheel driver vehicle and the weather is good.
However, it was nice to have someone help us look for birds and wildlife. She loved taking pictures and knew all of the great photostops. She did also carry a full pack with satellite phone, first aid kit, lunch and beverages.
The only downside is the cost, but if you appreciate the perspective of a homegrown Wanakan (is that a word?) it is definitely worth it.
Intimate look at how New Zealanders feel personally about conservation
James took us out on a fantastic day across Lake Wanaka to his special island of Mou Tapu. There, we had a beautiful climb up the 650′ island hearing about the conservation of the Buff Wekas in this protected place. Little did we know, but he would introduce us to his two favourites, Wally & Sally! James has been coming so many years that this couple feel safe with him, and enjoy sharing tea and biscuits (carried there by James). Even more, every time James goes to the island he takes a shrub … and water … and plants it, lovingly and ceremoniously with the group. 7,000 shrubs to date – fantastic!
Great tours, great guides
We booked for two tours by this outfit, and were very happy with both. The half-day boat/island walk was great fun, lots of information about the native birds, plants, history. Of course the scenery is just flat-out stunning. We also did a full-day walk near Haast Pass, which was a great experience. The forest is untouched, and we didn’t see anyone else during the several hours we were on the track. Our guides for both adventures were personable, informative, interesting–everything you want for a day enjoying nature.
